I don’t post smoothie or protein shake recipes very often here at proteinpow.com. I don’t because, as you probably know by now, I like to think outside the shake. I just like eating. I like sitting down, taking out my spoon or fork, and extending the process of calorie consumption as long as I possible can – to enjoy a cascade of nommage as opposed to a single knock-out blow of POW! That all being said, I sometimes get the urge to sit down and guzzle down a milkshake. It’s one of those things, you know? Hard to sub… But I never make regular shakes, no. I like to make special protein shakes and drink them as if they were gourmet shakes. Like this black onyx one!
1/4 cup of chocolate whey protein powder (See Note 1 below)
1 tbsp black onyx cocoa powder
1 + 1/2 cup cartoned coconut milk
1 tbsp coconut flakes
1 tsp cinnamon
Blend all the above ingredients together and sprinkle with some more coconut +/-cinnamon. Boom: done.
Macros per shake:
14g carbs (out of which a whooping 7g is fiber!)
1. Remember to choose a GREAT tasting chocolate protein powder as this will form the basis to your shake. There are just a LOT of chocolate abominations in the land of protein powders, have you noticed? Powders labeled rich chocolate or double chocolate or fudge chocolate or triple chocolate… and they end up tasting like @^£(&@%£^ instead of chocolate. I always tell people to try a sachet of a chocolate protein powder before buying the whole tub. If you want to be even safer though, don’t buy chocolate protein powder. Just buy a nice tasting vanilla and add your own cocoa to it!
2. If you don’t have black onyx cocoa powder, you can use regular cocoa. I used the black onyx here because it’s just a crazy cocoa powder and it gives the shake a slightly malty and almost oreo-like taste.
