Apple & Cinnamon Protein Yogurt
I don’t usually spend too long at the yogurt section of the grocery store. I normally just walk by it quickly, grab my tub of Fage’s Total Greek yogurt, and wheel my cart towards the meat, egg, and veggie aisles. But the other day, for some reason, I decided to hang around the yogurt section for a little bit; I wanted to check out what was going on there. And I found this: Twekkelo’s Farmhouse Apple & Cinnamon Yogurt. “Apple & Cinnamon? With Yogurt?” I was intrigued. The combination brought apple pie to mind and I’m a HUGE apple pie fiend. So I had to try it. I had to try it even though its second ingredient was ‘sugar’ and I tend to stay away from sugary stuff. I was excited about it though.
As soon as I got home, I took it out of my bag, grabbed a spoon, and… wooooo! It was incredible – the perfect combination of flavors and textures. You just get to the bottom of this thick and creamy yogurt and BOOM!!!! an explosion of apple and cinnamon! What’s not to love, right? Well, two things aren’t to love:
1. The sugar. Like I mentioned, it’s a pretty high-in-sugar yogurt. Most importantly though:
2. The yogurt contains raisins. Yeah. Raisins…. and…. I passionately loathe raisins.
While I was eating it though (raisins be damned), I thought I should try to strip it down to its basic components and protein empow(d)er it. Why not, right? Why not take what’s good about this yogurt and ditch what’s not so great? Enter this recipe:
1/4 cup unsweetened apple sauce (see Note 1 below for add-ons)
1 scoop vanilla whey (see Note 2 below)
1/2 to 1 tablespoon cinnamon (depending on how cinnamony you want it)
1 tablespoon toffee flavdrops (or your sweetener of choice)
1 pot (170g) of Total 0% Greek Yogurt (or 2% or full-fat)
1. Mix the applesauce with the vanilla whey, cinnamon, and flavdrops.
2. Add the mix on top of the yogurt.
3. Dig. In.
Macros per Serving (out of 1):
14g carbs (6.2g sugars/0.8g fiber)
1. To add more texture, you could steam some apples, cut them up roughly, and mix them in with the yogurt. You could also add… raisins if you’re so inclined. Or chunks of dates. The result is like a creamy apple pie but… in yogurt form: nom nom nom!
2. Make sure you use a really nice vanilla protein pow. I like using Cellucor’s Whipped Vanilla (you can get it here if you’re in the US and here if you’re in the UK). Alternatively, Kinetica’s vanilla whey is really nice!
